Don’t let anyone lie to you! Those who have premarital sex, those who worship manmade gods, those who cheat on their spouses, those who have sex with members of the same gender, thieves, the greedy, alcoholics, those who are verbally abusive and extortioners will not inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, paraphrased)

Do you see your lifestyle, your habit, your sin in this list? That passage is saying, as long as you love that behavior and refuse to turn away from it, heaven will NOT be your eternal destination. Furthermore, anyone who excuses your behavior and says that you can be a Christian and still do these things is lying to you. They are robbing you of a wonderful gift! According to Romans 1:18-25 folks who do this have denied God, created a false deity and belief system, and are committing, excusing and approving behaviors that God says are worthy of death (See also Leviticus 18 & 20).

Does that seem harsh to you? Unloving, judgmental, narrow-minded?

In Galatians 5:19-21, the Apostle Paul makes a similar statement, adding lust, drug use, hatred, argumentativeness, jealousy/envy, unbridled anger, selfish ambition, divisiveness, cliquishness, murderous and partying lifestyles as behaviors that prove you are living by the flesh and not God’s Spirit. Here, also, he warns that “those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” In contrast, “those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions” (v. 24). They no longer commit the sins that controlled them before.

I am NOT saying that if you commit these sins, you can’t be saved. Jesus died to rescue people from ALL these things. 1 Corinthians 6:11 proves it by adding, “this is what some of you used to be. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.”

The next verse goes on to explain that not everything you want to do or think you can do is good for you, and you should not engage in any activity that controls your life (v. 12). Your body was purchased by the blood of Jesus and is now the home of the Holy Spirit (19-20). You are not supposed to misuse your body through sexual activity that God says is wrong (15-18). God wants you to use your body to serve Him, not your own or someone else’s lusts (13). The very same power that raised Jesus from the dead is able to raise you out of a lifestyle that degrades you and hurts God and others (14).

So stop calling yourself a Christian while letting sin control your life. God has something better for you than that! Turn away from shameful behaviors, and let the Lord give you true liberty and a clean heart in Christ (Romans 6:21-23). Then you will experience real life here and hereafter.
